PITSBURG – The Franklin Monroe Jets outscored the Tri-County North Panthers 8-0 at the fourth quarter free throw line to take a 49-38 win.
“They gave us their best shot,” Franklin Monroe boys basketball coach Troy Myers said. “Give credit to North.”
FM used a minute and 26 seconds starting with two Henry Bourne free throws, back-to-back Martin Maksvytis and Travis Feitshans layups off steals and a Trey Mong bucket for an 8-0 run to lead 8-2 at 5:32 in the first period following a Panthers 2-0 game-opening lead.
A North basket was followed with the Jets second 8-0 run of the first quarter with Marcus Horner hitting back-to-back free throws, a layup and a basket each from Maksvytis and Mong for a 16-4 first quarter ending lead.
The Panthers used a slow down second period offense to outscore Franklin Monroe 9-7 for a Jets 23-13 lead at the half.
“Whether we fell into the homecoming hangover or not, it doesn’t matter,” Myers said. “You have to come out and play. They went into that zone and slowed the pace up a little bit.”
North used the third quarter to make the game close, putting 16 points in the book while holding the Jets to 10 third-quarter points, cutting FM’s lead to 33-29.
“We weren’t efficient on the offensive end for two quarters,” Myers said. “It hurt us.”
Leading 28-24 Daniel Wiseman came in off the Jets bench to knock down a 3-pointer from the wing, giving FM a 31-24 lead at 0:46 on the third quarter clock only to be matched with a Panthers’ trey.
“Danny (Wiseman) is super special. He’s a program guy,” Myers said. “He’s a winner through and through. We’ve given him a responsibility that not many juniors like, but he has accepted that responsibility and given it to us every day.
“He’s all into our program,” Myers continued. “That’s what you need ultimately because in a crunch time when you have to pick that guy that’s all in off your bench and say go lock in for us and help us out, you see what it produced.”
A North steal and basket cut the Jets’ third quarter lead to two points with 0:16 on the clock. With time running out, Wiseman made a strong move to the basket, scoring his fifth consecutive Jets point at 0:02 for a 33-29 FM lead heading to the final period.
“I told them the first thing in the locker room (after the game) you congratulate Danny (Wiseman),” Myers said. “Tell him he’s the player of the game because he should be. He deserves it. So super proud of him.”
Tri-County opened fourth quarter scoring again, reducing the Jets’ lead to two points at 33-31 with 7:35 on the clock.
“My face got beet red, and my tie was about to come off there in the fourth quarter,” Myers said. “It wasn’t a lack of energy; it was just a lack of discipline. We didn’t execute.”
At 6:35 the Jets righted the ship with 11 unanswered points, starting with an assist from Wiseman to Feitshans going strong to the basket for a layup and a foul for a three-point play and a little breathing room at 36-31.
Mong continued the run with a 5-foot turn-around jumper in the paint followed with a full court pass from Feitshans to Maksvytis for a layup and a 40-31 advantage.
With 3:49 on the clock the Panthers were whistled for an intentional foul on Maksvytis, sending the Jets’ 6-foot junior guard to the line, nailing both free throws, and FM in possession of the ball with a 42-31 lead.
A Feitshans goal with the help of a Maksvytis assist completed the Jets’ 11-0 scoring run, bringing a timeout from the Panthers’ bench.
A North trey was followed with Maksvytis hitting both ends of a one-and-one.
Two late baskets by the Panthers, a Feitshans free throw and Horner sinking 2-of-2 at the line sealed the 49-38 Franklin Monroe win on homecoming night in Pitsburg.
“They locked in for about eight minutes of that game and got a ‘W,’” Myers said. ”We’re happy with win No. 12 but right back to work on Monday.”
FM was 15-of-19 at the line, shooting 79 percent, with North hitting a perfect 6-for-6.
