VERSAILLES — Versailles scored 13 runs in the fifth inning on Monday to overcome a 4-3 deficit and run rule National Trail 16-4 in an Ohio High School Athletic Association sectional tournament softball game.

After setting down National Trail in the top half of the first inning, Versailles’ offense went to work in the bottom half of the frame and scored three runs.

Kristin Langston started the rally with a leadoff single, and then Miranda Huddle walked to give the Lady Tigers two base runners with no outs. Rachel Kremer came through with a RBI single, scoring Langston for the first run of the game for a 1-0 Versailles lead.

Huddle, who advanced to third on Kremer’s single, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kayla McEldowney to make it 2-0.

Another sacrifice by Shaena Mayer advanced Heather Albers, Kremer’s courtesy runner, to third. Albers then scored on a double by Courtney McEldowney to increase the Lady Tiger lead to 3-0.

But after that Versailles was unable to score for the new few innings, and National Trail took the lead.

It started in the second inning with a two-run home run by Allison Unger following a single by Payten Laird to cut Versailles’ lead to 3-2.

The Blazers took the lead in the top half of the fifth inning. Nicole Witt led off with a single and scored on a Maegan Rogers double to tie the game at 3-3. An error allowed Rogers to advance to third, which was followed by a single from Jennifer Stan to give Trail a 4-3 lead.

The lead didn’t hold for long, however, as Versailles scored 13 runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the 10-run run rule.

Kremer started the rally with a one-out single. Kayla McEldowney then singled, and Mayer walked to load the bases. Courtney McEldowney then drove in Albers, who was running for Kremer again, to tie the game at 4-4.

Still with one out, Aimee Powell singled to score Kayla McEldowney and give Versailles a 5-4 lead. Mayer then scored on an error, making it 6-4 Versailles. Lauren Heitkamp proceeded to hit a double to drive in Courtney McEldowney and Powell, increasing the Lady Tiger lead to 8-4.

The rally continued with back-to-back singles from Rachel Wenning and Langston. Huddle then singled to score Heitkamp, making it 9-4. Kremer then got a single to score Paige Holsapple, who was Wenning’s courtesy runner, increasing the lead to 10-4.

National Trail got a strikeout for out No. 2, but Mayer proceeded to get a hit to bring in two more runs, making it 12-4. Courtney McEldowney then got a hit for a 13-1 lead, and Powell capped off the rally with a three-run home run to end the game with a 16-4 run rule.

Versailles out-hit National Trail 16 to eight in the game. Both teams made one error.

Powell was 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored for Versailles. Kremer went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
