COLUMBUS — Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor is urging Ohioans newly eligible for Medicare to attend free “Welcome to Medicare” events sponsored by the Ohio Department of Insurance. The statewide events are intended to help more than 100,000 soon-to-be Medicare recipients understand their health insurance coverage options.

“We want those new to Medicare and those nearing eligibility to have confidence that they are selecting plans that best suit their budget and health care needs,” said Taylor, also director of the Ohio Department of Insurance.

Department Medicare experts will cover topics such as Medicare Part A and B benefits, Part D prescription drug coverage, Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage plans, financial assistance and key deadlines. The events run April 4 to June 21.

In 2016 the department helped more than 340,000 Ohioans with Medicare save $28.8 million by assisting people in comparing and selecting appropriate plans and connecting individuals with financial assistance programs.

People who have enrollment questions can also contact the department at 1-800-686-1578 or call 1-800-MEDICARE. Coverage enrollment can be completed at www.medicare.gov.

The department will also host “Welcome to Medicare” Facebook Live events at www.facebook.com/OSHIIP and public webinars viewable via www.insurance.ohio.gov. For an events listing visit the Ohio Department of Insurance website.
