DARKE COUNTY – As they have done the entire school year, Darke County athletes are continuing to excel.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week have established themselves among the best athletes on their team and in the area.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Greenville boys tennis player Sam Bowers and Arcanum girls track and field athlete Chasity Fuson.

Fuson is a 300-meter hurdler and mid-distance runner for Arcanum. She is one of the top hurdlers in the area, Arcanum track and field coach Chris Kessler said.

“Chasity has been working really hard this season, focusing on the 300 hurdles wanting to go to state as a senior,” Kessler said.

So far this season Fuson’s best time in the 300 hurdles was a 49.87 at an Arcanum home meet on March 27.

Fuson also is a great team leader, Kessler said.

Bowers has recorded a record of 10-6 in the boys tennis season, playing No. 1 doubles for Greenville alongside Landen Kiser.

“They’re having a great year,” Greenville boys tennis coach Dennis Kiser said. “I’ve really been pleased with their play. They’re both really competitive.”

Bowers along with Landen Kiser and Derek Lockhart are all right with each other as the best players on the team, coach Kiser said. Bowers stepped into the doubles role to do what was best for the team, the coach said.

“He was willing to step in and do that for the betterment of the team,” coach Kiser said. “He could easily be playing second singles.”
