Rape trial delayed

TROY (AP) - A trial has been delayed to allow time to evaluate the mental health of an adoptive father accused of raping young boys in his care in western Ohio.

A Miami County judge on Wednesday stayed proceedings pending results of an assessment of the 40-year-old man’s sanity and competency to stand trial. That means a trial planned for Oct. 2 will be rescheduled.

Attorney Nick Gounaris (goo-NAHR’-is) says he’s also filed a competency motion in Montgomery County where the man faces related charges. Gounaris declined after the hearing to discuss the man’s mental health.

The Troy man is accused of raping three boys, ages 9-12. He had adopted two and was in the process of adopting the third boy.

The Associated Press isn’t naming the father to protect the children’s identities.
