DARKE COUNTY — While teams often rely on experienced veterans, Darke County has seen several young players called upon as well.

Whether it’s a senior or freshman, players are expected to step up when needed. This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week include a freshman and a senior.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Greenville girls tennis player Raquel Navas-Davis and Tri-Village soccer player Andrew Willcox.

Navas-Davis went 18-1in dual matches this season for the Lady Wave. She broke Greenville’s single season wins total for third singles that previously was held by teammate Michelle Borgerding.

“She’s really done well for a freshman,” Greenville girls tennis coach Jim Koontz said.

Navas-Davis won one sectional tournament match, against a senior from Central Catholic, before being eliminated from the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s postseason. She also went 2-1 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference Gold Flight tournament.

She was able to have the success despite battling tendonitis in her knee all season, Koontz said.

“She kind of limped through a match here and limped through a match there and just kept on going,” he said. “It was great because she’s been on a bad knee here a lot. She just kept on going. If she didn’t have that bad knee, she might have won a couple more.”

Navas-Davis helped Greenville go 16-3 on the season and 4-1 in GWOC North play to capture a share of the division title.

“I’m real proud of her. She hangs in there,” Koontz said. “She’s a trooper.”

Willcox helped lead Tri-Village to its first win of the season Tuesday, scoring a goal in the Patriots’ win against Tri-County North on the Patriots’ senior night.

The senior captain leads Tri-Village in scoring with six goals and one assist.

“Andrew came through in the clutch then with the third goal,” Tri-Village coach Chuck Willcox said. “He’s been pretty much our offense for this season, but it’s great to see other kids scoring, too. He’s not afraid to try to get it to kids to score because he knows everybody is up against him right now.”
