Prakel qualifies for national meet

Versailles’ Samuel Prakel runs at the 2012 Ohio High School Athletic Association state championship cross country meet. Prakel finished sixth at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship Midwest Regionals to qualify for the national finals.


VERSAILLES – Versailles High School senior Samuel Prakel finished sixth at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championship Midwest Regionals to qualify for the national finals.

Competing at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. Saturday, Prakel raced against the region’s top runners in a 5,000-meter race. On a day in which the temperature was in the mid-20s, Prakel finished the race in 15:04 to place sixth.

Jake Leingang of Bismarck, N.D., won the race with a time of 14:56. Rounding out the top five were Sam Wharton from Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City with a time of 14:56; Nicholas Raymond from Erie, Mich., with a time of 15:02; Patrick Perrier from O’Fallon, Ill., with a time of 15:03; and Grant Nykaza from Beecher, Ill., with a time of 15:04.

By finishing in the top 10 in his region, Prakel earned an invitation to the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals on Dec. 8 at Morley Field, Balboa Park in San Diego.
