Prakel won Wendy’s High School Heisman Friday night and competed at the the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals in San Diego Saturday.
SAN DIEGO – Samuel Prakel has a long list of accolades that include multiple state championships, earning the rank of Eagle Scout and being on track to finish as his class’ valedictorian. But the award he won Friday night tops all those accomplishments.
The Versailles High School senior was named a 2012 Wendy’s High School Heisman winner, joining Zoe Alaniz of Corpus Christi, Texas, as the national winners selected from more than 45,000 applicants.
“I think this is probably the most important award I’ve won in my life,” Prakel said by phone Saturday in San Diego, where he ran at the 34th annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships.
Prakel said winning the High School Heisman means so much to him because it recognizes all his achievements in sports, in school and in the community. The award, which is in its 19th year, is given annually to two high school seniors who excel in sports, academics and community involvement.
