DARKE COUNTY - The Board of Directors for the Darke County Agricultural Society are pleased to announce that Montgomery Gentry will headline the Aug. 18 concert during the 157th Great Darke Fair. Florida Georgia Line will be the opening act beginning at 7:30 p.m.
With a new album, a new label and a renewed sense of musical purpose, Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry are poised to stake their claim as one of country music’s all-time greatest duos. When the two Kentucky boys—Eddie from Lancaster and Troy from Lexington— busted onto the national scene in 1999 with the defiant “Hillbilly Shoes,” country music had never seen a hard driving duo like this.
The duo’s new collection, the aptly titled Rebels On The Run, brings Montgomery Gentry fans back to the beginning, but with a fresh attitude. Produced by Michael Knox, who has helped build Jason Aldean to superstar status, Eddie and Troy’s latest effort will likely be remembered as their best album thus far in their decade-plus history.
“We grew up on Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Merle Haggard,” Eddie Montgomery said. “That’s who we are. We cut our teeth in the honky tonks and no matter what you try to do, we have to be us or it just doesn’t sound right.”
The full-throttle excitement that Florida Georgia Line has carried to packed houses throughout the Southeast is now going nationwide. The duo—Monroe, Georgia’s Tyler Hubbard and Ormond Beach, Florida’s Brian Kelley—have turned their brand of showmanship into opening slots for artists like Jake Owen, Brantley Gilbert and Colt Ford.
The group has also earned a coveted spot on the 2012 Country Throwdown Tour with the likes of Gary Allan, Rodney Atkins, and Justin Moore. They will be touring in 2013 with Luke Bryan and doing select shows with Taylor Swift.
Now Florida Georgia Line has captured their fire and energy in a new single, “Cruise.” The song quickly rose to the top of the iTunes sales charts, and has reached the No. 1 Single on Billboard and Media Base country charts.
The first offering from their five-song EP “It’z Just What We Do,” their trademark harmonies and rocking sound to bear on a tale of youthful attraction, music and Georgia back roads. Produced by Joey Moi, whose credits range from Jake Owen to Nickelback, “Cruise” is sure to thrill their old and new fans alike.
While the two groups scheduled for 2013 are certainly top-notch entertainment, Darke County Fair Manager Daryl Riffle said the final headlining decision is always a crucial one.
“It’s always a tough decision,” Riffle said. “We’re making a decision in October that we hope will be a very positive experience 10 months down the road.
The fair board puts together a list of six choices each year, and the board members vote on the final decision based on their best choice for community entertainment.
This year, Riffle said the six choices were a mix of classic rock and country due to previous successes.
“We’ve been successful with both country and classic rock,” Riffle said. “And the responses that we’re getting back through social media right now have been positive.”
According to Riffle, Florida Georgia Line was one of the frontrunner opening acts from the beginning, and Montgomery Gentry paired perfectly for the 2013 show.
The choice to have a well-established group like Montgomery Gentry supported by an up-and-coming act like Florida Georgia Line was a great situation to be in, Riffle said.
This year the headlining announcement came earlier than usual, as the Sunday act has traditionally been announced in January or even as late as February. The fair board hopes the early announcement will generate additional community interest for the upcoming celebration.
