GREENVILLE - Laura Bemus has filled the director of curriculum for grades kindergarten through eight, and special education positions for the Greenville City School District.

According to Bemus her job consists of working to support staff members to ensure that students are achieving academic progress and remaining successful in school. Part of that job is to implement the recent changes in legislation which shifted the Fourth Grade Guarantee to the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, Bemus said.

“The goal of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee is to give greater emphasis to reading instruction and intervention in the early grades,” Bemus said. “Greenville City Schools has always emphasized the importance of reading, especially at the early grades. In addition, to meet the new requirements, we have tested all students in grades K-3 to identify those not reading on grade level, notified their parents in writing, developed a reading improvement and monitoring plan, and are providing intense intervention in reading instruction daily.”
