ARCANUM – The Arcanum girls basketball team dominated Bethel Thursday night, beating the Bees 50-12 in Cross County Conference action.
Arcanum held Bethel to just three first half points, leading 18-2 at the end of the first quarter and 33-3 at halftime. The Trojans extended their lead to 44-9 at the end of the third quarter en route to the 38-point margin of victory.
“I thought we played well,” Arcanum girls basketball coach Rachel Fearon said. “It was a good opportunity for us to play some of our younger girls lots of minutes. It was a good opportunity to give them that exposure before going into tournament.”
Arcanum’s Alexis Abner was the leading scorer on the night with 16 points, which was more than Bethel’s entire team scored. Abbey O’Donnell of Arcanum also matched Bethel’s scoring with 12 points of her own.
Also for Arcanum, Josie Weaver scored six points, Rebecca Deao scored five, Rebecca Denniston scored three, Hannah Prestel scored three, Loganne Stone scored three, and Abby Ross scored two.
“We we real patient,” Fearon said. “We got good shots off tonight, and that helped us a lot just to see that we can run our offense and when we are patient and and we take care of the ball, we do get good shots off. And that was good for them to see that tonight.”
Breanne Whetstone led Bethel with five points in the game.
“Defensively I was happy, especially in the first half,” Fearon said. “We held them to three (points in the first half), and I told my girls, whatever you do, do not come out of this locker room and let up on defense. That’s what we preach around here, is our defense, and I was really happy with their effort on D tonight.”
Thursday’s win, which improved the Trojans to 9-10 overall and 6-5 in the CCC, was big for Arcanum as it gets ready for the draw for seeds in the Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason tournament, Fearon said.
“These last two wins have been real big going into tournament time; we go for draw on Sunday, and it puts us almost in the middle of the pack with everybody,” she said.
