Greenville wrestlers (left to right) William Niebert (freshman, 152), Nick Woodruff (senior, 220), Nelson Roberts (senior, 132), Kory Bannon (junior, 195) and Ian Warner (junior, 126) will travel to Bowling Green for a Ohio High School Athletic Association district tournament. Niebert, Roberts, Warner and Woodruff qualified for districts by finishing in the top four of their sectional while Bannon finished fifth at the sectional to become an alternate for the district tournament.
GREENVILLE — Four Greenville wrestlers will compete in an Ohio High School Athletic Association district meet Friday and Saturday at Bowling Green State University.
Freshman William Nibert, senior Nelson Roberts, junior Ian Warner and senior Nick Woodruff each qualified for the Division II district tournament by placing in the top four of their sectional tournament last weekend at Tippecanoe High School. Junior Kory Bannon will go to the district tournament as an alternate as he placed fifth at sectionals.
Roberts won the 132-pound weight class at the sectional meet. He got a 16-0 technical fall against Carroll junior Mykel Seabury, got another 17-2 technical fall against Milton-Union sophomore Canaan Berry and got a 19-3 technical fall against Franklin junior Jordan Brewer in the championship match.
Woodruff was the runner up in the sectional’s 220-pound weight class. After a first-round bye, he pinned Franklin senior Kelly Leforce in 47 seconds and then was pinned by Benjamin Logan junior Beau Swank in 1:54 in the championship match.
Nibert finished in fourth place in the 152-pound weight class at Tippecanoe. He pinned Milton-Union freshman Austin Menker in 1:46, was pinned by Franklin senior Jacob Wright, won a 16-6 major decision against Valley View senior Austin Land and then was pinned in 2:02 in the third-place match by Carroll senior Colt Cruset.
Warren placed fourth in the 126-pound weight class at the sectional meet. After a first-round bye, he was pinned by Franklin senior Matt Middleton in 48 seconds, then he pinned Tippecanoe freshman Jordan Brown in 1:26 and was pinned by Carroll senior A.J. Michalo in 2:13 in the third-place match.
Bannon finished fifth in the 195-pound weight class at Tippecanoe. He pinned Bellefontaine sophomore Andrew Skidmore in 3:47, was pinned by Franklin sophomore Michael Crockett in 4:48, lost a 5-4 decision to Carroll junior Ian Czanik and then again pinned Skidmore in 3:36.
The district-qualifying wrestlers from Greenville will compete at Bowling Green’s Stroh Center beginning at 3 p.m. Friday. The meet, which will determine the state tournament qualifiers, will continue at 11 a.m. Saturday.
