8 Versailles wrestlers advance to district


VERSAILLES — Eight Versailles wrestlers will compete at a district tournament Friday and Saturday at Fairmont High School in Kettering.

Freshman Corey Dieringer, sophomore Kyle Dieringer, senior Nic Francis, freshman Nathan Henry, junior Matt Mangen, senior Andrew Slonkosky, senior Andrew Smith and senior Matt Subler qualified for the Division III district tournament as Versailles finished as the sectional runner up to Covington this past weekend at Lehman Catholic.

Henry won the 106-pound class as he beat Northeastern junior Christina Cullison 10-3, beat Covington freshman Connor Ryan 8-4 and beat Troy Christian sophomore Zachary Davie 4-3 in the championship match.

Smith won the 285-pound class as he pinned West Liberty-Salem freshman Hunter Stewart in 1:49, beat Miami East freshman Ben Ferguson 12-10 and beat Covington junior Jordan Wolfe 7-1 in the championship match.

Mangen was the runner up in the 132-pound class as he got a technical fall against Catholic Central sophomore Jake Morman, beat Troy Christian freshman Chase Mayhabb 6-4 and then lost 5-0 to Mechanicsburg sophomore Joe Ziegler in the championship match.

Subler was the runner up in the 138-pound class as he got a technical fall against Tri-County North sophomore Dustin Green, beat Catholic Central junior Anthony Decarlo 7-3 and was pinned by Mechanicsburg junior Austin Reese in 3:37.

Kyle Dieringer was the runner up in the 195-pound class as he pinned Arcanum junior Jared Hofacker in 32 seconds, pinned Northeastern junior Adam Sudhoff in 37 seconds, pinned Riverside sophomore Bill Walter in 1:49 and then was pinned by Covington senior Brian Olson in 3:01 in the championship match.

Slonkosky finished third in the 126-pound weight class as he pinned Catholic Central freshman Travis McConnell in one minute, lost a 6-3 decision to West Liberty-Salem freshman Trevor Anderson, pinned Miami East senior Stephen Morrow in 2:15 and pinned Triad junior Andrew Zirkle in 4:18.

Corey Dieringer finished fourth in the 120-pound class as he was pinned by Mechanicsburg freshman Nick Miller in 4:21, pinned West Liberty-Salem sophomore Zach Henault in 1:57, beat Northeastern freshman Jordan Seibold 5-0 and lost 6-4 to Miller.

Francis finished fourth in the 182-pound class as he lost 9-4 to Tri-County North senior J.J. Macpherson, pinned Catholic Central junior Nick Burkhard in 19 seconds, beat Arcanum sophomore Lucas Gower, beat Triad junior Rickey Bruce and was pinned by Macpherson in 50 seconds.

The Versailles wrestlers will compete at the district tournament beginning at 3 p.m. Friday at Fairmont. The tournament, which will determine the state qualifiers, will continue at 10 a.m. Saturday.
