DARKE COUNTY – If you’ve lived in Darke County long enough, chances are you’ve seen the occasional stray cat running through your neighborhood.

While Darke County doesn’t track the specific number of stray cats in the area, estimates have ranged from up to 70 million on a national level.

“It’s out of control,” he said. “I don’t know if its getting bigger, but it’s just been an endless problem forever,” said Darke County Animal Shelter Director Duane Sanning.

Sanning estimated he’s been dealing with the same problem since he began working at the shelter more than 12 years ago, and as long as people refrain from spaying or neutering their animals, the issue will remain.
