Students get jobs done during Serve Arcanum

ARCANUM — More than 275 students in grades 9-12 completed more than 50 projects assigned them through the annual Serve Arcanum program on Friday.

Arcanum High School Principal Jason Stephan said most of the job assignments included landscaping, painting, planting trees by the school and working on the new playground equipment in Ivester Park.

“This gives the kids a great feeling,” said Stephan, who started the project four years ago. “Everybody wants to come out and do this for the community. Teachers and parents help supervise the groups.”

The biggest group appeared to be at Ivester Park. There, they, with the help of four employees from PlayWorld, put together two new play sets.

“We got them through a grant from NatureWorks,” said Vanessa Delk, who serves on Arcanum Village Council and there to help out with the project as well. “We are going to mulch tomorrow [Saturday]”

Over at Betty Weisenbarger’s house, four students were mulching her landscaping.

This is the second time I’ve had it done,” she said. “Last year, I did not have enough [supplies]. I asked for a couple of them to come back.

At Daniel Roudebush’s residence, two freshmen, Kalen McCoy and Tristen O’Brien, laid down some mulch and planted some flowers in his flower bed near the house. Roudebush said he has sought the help from Arcanum students at other Serve Arcanum days.

Seen washing down fire engines are the Arcanum Fire Department were seniors Danny Dendler, Jenny Ford, Mike Johnson, Michaela McGuffie, junior Izzy Whiting and sophomore Christian Brumbaugh.

Afterwards, Stephan said the students were treated to a cookout.

“And, they play games,” he said. “We call it a Spring Fling.”

Serving on the Serve Arcanum Committee with Stephan are teachers Lora Brandon, Andrew Bryant and Sarah Murphy, school nurse Terri Greve and aides Rachel Fearon and Alychia Wright.

Stephan said the community is appreciative of this gesture.

“This is one of our ways to say thanks for what the community does for us,” the principal said in a previous interview. “We usually have 275 to 280 kids doing the work. We do things for churches, citizens, the school and organizations. We average 30 projects a year with it.”
