Walmart greeter surprised on 90th birthday

GREENVILLE — Co-workers, family and friends gathered in the employee lounge at Walmart to surprise Elizabeth Brewer on her 90th birthday Thursday afternoon.

Brewer, a greeter at Walmart for the last 10 years-plus, broke into tears as she entered the lounge and saw the large group waiting for her to appear.

“Oh gosh, I don’t believe this,” she said as she bowed her head and covered her eyes. “One thing, God gave you a lot of love to do this. God loves all of you.”

Don and Dennis Brewer, two of her three sons, came as did some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Son Dave was unable to be there. Grandson Shaun was there with one of his five children, 3-year-old Luke, and Shaun’s brother and his family — Brad Brewer, wife Kylie and Gracie, Zachariah, Charlie and Eli — came all the way from Florida to help Elizabeth celebrate.

Brewer, who was widowed in 2003 upon the death of husband Reuben, drove school bus for 19 years for Mississinawa Valley Local School District and helped on the family farm.

The former Elizabeth Wirrig, she graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1944.

According to her family members, she loves college basketball and is a fan of Duke University. A long-time member of Teegarden Congregational Christian Church, between Ansonia and Union City, she also enjoys playing solitaire on the computer.

Her son said that Walmart called Brewer into work at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, and she apparently remarked, “Why are they doing that, they know I don’t get up until 10?”

But, because of her dedication, she did as asked.

Shoppers heading into the store during her shift saw her wearing a crown someone had given her from the store as a birthday gift.

“She gives customers a hard time with that smile of hers,” a Walmart employee said.

Another employee told her, “We are sending you home as soon as this party is over.”

Brewer was also presented with a basket full of cards from her co-workers as well as a gift and cake.

She was appreciative.

“I enjoy every minute of Walmart,” she said.
