UC man faces charges following hit and run

UNION CITY, Indiana — A Union City, Indiana, man is in custody following a hit and run incident which left one dead and two injured.

Union City Police quickly located the vehicle in question and arrested Ramon Angulo Marin, 36, at his North Union Street residence.

At approximately 10:08 p.m. Friday night, Union City Emergency Services were dispatched to the area in front of 417 West Hickory Street on an initial report of a hit and run accident involving of vehicle that had crashed into the St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 425 West Hickory Street. As officers and medics were responding, they were advised that the suspect’s vehicle had possibly run over some pedestrians attending a party and that he was fleeing the scene.

Officers arriving at the scene found three partygoers seriously injured. One victim, Jose Amelio Aguilar, 33, of Union City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two others, Juan Aguilar, 22, and Neptali Vasquez, 27, both of Union City, suffered severe injuries and were flown from the scene by CareFlight for treatment. As of Sunday, the Union City Police stated both are listed in critical condition and reportedly in ICU.

Witnesses advised that a fight had broken out and that Marin had started to flee the scene by backing up in his vehicle erratically and at a high rate of speed. Officers were told the suspect had struck all three of the pedestrians at this time, and then continued backing up until striking St. Mary’s Church. The suspect then fled the scene.

Marin was transported to the Randolph County, Indiana, Jail where he faces charges of Voluntary Manslaughter (level 2 felony); Reckless Homicide (level 5 felony); and Leaving the scene of an accident — resulting in death (level 5 felony). A $200,000 bond was set. There has also been a permanent retainer set from Immigration Customs Enforcement.
