Police investigate ‘clown attack’ in Greenville

GREENVILLE — Halloween is more than a month away, yet there may (or may not) be some scary ghouls prowling the streets of The Treaty City.

On Tuesday, the Greenville Police Department received a report from a man who said he was chased and assaulted by two people wearing clown makeup early in the morning in downtown Greenville.

Greenville Police Chief Dennis L. Butts confirmed to The Daily Advocate that his department spoke to the person reportedly assaulted.

“We talked to the guy, we didn’t take a report yet, but we talked to him and have a long-term caller I.D.,” Butts said.

The man, 28, whose name was not released, called police at approximately 3:55 a.m. from the 200 block of Tillman Avenue. The alleged assault took place on South Broadway.

“The guy indicated he was chased and assaulted by two guys in clown face,” Butts explained. “And for some reason, the guy who was assaulted was carrying a ball bat and they took his ball bat, too.”

When asked if that seemed unusual, Butts agreed, saying, “That’s what we thought. The officer gave him a written statement to complete. And he is to contact the officer when he comes back to duty at midnight tonight.”

“We checked the area, we talked to some people delivering papers in the area — nobody saw anything except for the guy,” Butts added.

Butts said while police will earnestly investigate the alleged incident, there are no motives or suspects at this time, “Other than we have a guy who was walking around at 3:55 in the morning with a ball bat.”

This incident joins other suspicious behavior by people dressed as clowns being reported in various parts of the country over the past few weeks.
