Man seriously injured after hitting semi

DARKE COUNTY — A Union City man was airlifted after his truck hit a semi Tuesday night.

On March 14 at 11:27 p.m. Darke County Sheriff Deputies along with Ansonia Rescue, Ansonia Fire and Miami Valley Careflight responded to an injury accident in the 10,700 block of State Route 49.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1996 Peterbuilt semi truck and trailer driven by Robert Byram, 34, of Ansonia, was northbound on State Route 49 and was attempting to back into a private drive on the west side of the road. The semi was struck by a 1991 GMC pickup truck travelling southbound on State Route 49, driven by Douglas Shaneyfelt, 52, of Union City, Indiana.

Shaneyfelt was transported from the scene by Ansonia Rescue to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office landing zone where they were met by Miami Valley Careflight. Shaneyfelt was then taken to Miami Valley Hospital by Careflight where he is listed in stable condition.

The accident remains under investigation
