UNION CITY — A large crowd packed the Mississinawa Valley High School gym Friday to witness the Class of 2017 receive their diplomas.

During the fifty-eighth annual commencement exercises, the Mississinawa Valley Concert Band played the “Senior Processional,” the “National Anthem,” the “Alma Mater,” and the “Recessional.”

The 2017 Class Motto were lyrics from country singer Tim McGraw’s song “My Little Girl” which say, “Chase your dreams, but always know the road that will lead you home again.”

Speakers included Senior Class President Shaiann Livingston, High School Principal Jefferey A. Winchester, Valedictorians Spencer Warren and Shelby Manning, and Salutatorian Kelsie Hunt. Hunt advised her classmates that life does not always go as planned.

“Sometimes change leads us to something better than we had ever imagined,” she said.

Class of 2017 officers were President Shaiann Livingston, Vice-President Makayla Connor, Secretary/Treasurer Shelbey Copeland, Advisor Kim Hershey, and Student Council Representative Shelby Manning. The class colors were red, white and black, and the class flower was a red rose tipped in black with silver ribbon. The Junior Marshals were the top academic boy and girl — Paxton Scholl and Josiah Philliposian. Principal Winchester announced the class scholarship and grant recipients.

“The Darke County Foundation started in 1986,” he said. “Since then, the total amount of scholarships and community grants has exceeded $2.1 million. We would like to thank the community for their generous support.”

Diplomas were awarded to the graduates by Superintendent Douglas Dunham and Missinawa Valley Board of Education President Matt Hiestand.
