Driver charged with hitting Arcanum student
DARKE COUNTY - A 24-year-old woman has been charged with hitting a female Arcanum-Butler student with her car as the girl was on her way to school.
According to the Darke County Prosecutor’s Office, Billie N. Skeens of Houston, Ohio has been charged with three misdemeanor offenses, including driving while under suspension, reckless operation of a vehicle and failure to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk.
The middle school student was airlifted after being struck by Skeens on Dec. 20. 2013 at the front designated crosswalk of the school.
Arcanum-Butler Superintendent John Stephens told The Daily Advocate that the injured student continues to get better and did make it home for Christmas. However, with her extensive injuries it will take some time to fully recover.
“We have spoken with her mother a few times in regards to transitioning her back into school with either partial days or by Skype online,” said Stephens.
Skeens will appear in Darke County Municipal Court for the charges Feb. 11 at 8.m.
