PLEASANT HILL — The shattered remains of a horse-drawn buggy littered the roadway in the 1700 block of State Route 721, just north of State Route 718, Wednesday morning after a dump truck collided into the carriage.

The crash occurred at about 11 a.m., when the northbound buggy was struck by the northbound dump truck.

The carriage had four passengers, an adult female, Ellen Grim, 36, of Arcanum, and three children, ages 5, 8, and 10.

Grim was witnessed walking around in the aftermath of the accident and the children, not believed to be seriously injured, were transported to the Upper Valley Medical Center by medics from Pleasant Hill and Bradford for treatment of several lacerations, according to the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

The dump truck driver, identified as Jeremy Kautz, 38, of Ansonia, was cited with failure to yield, said sheriff’s Sgt. Lee McCartney. Kautz was not injured.

“He came up on them and says he was passing,” McCartney said. “I think he didn’t see them until the last second and swerved to get out around them and struck the left corner of the buggy.”

McCartney said motorists should be cautious when passing slow-moving vehicles.

The horse that was pulling the carriage was also uninjured.
