GREENVILLE - Jean Fourman was honored for her 50 years of service at a recent reception in the aviary at the Brethren Retirement Community, where she works as an aide.

Fourman started working as an aide at the Brethren’s Home, and only worked one year in the kitchen before returning as an aide, a position she has served ever since.

“I got my STNA [State-tested nurse’s aides license],” said Fourman, who works third shift.

Fourman said it was a friend who lived close to her who told her about working at the facility.

“She said I’d like it,” Fourman recalled. “I like being around the elderly and helping out.”

When she was hired the first of May at the end of her junior year of high school, Fourman said the Honeymans were matron and patron of the Brethren’s Home at the time.

The honoree said she has seen many changes over the five decades she’s been with the facility.

“The 1962 building was just finished when I came,” she said. “I saw the other buildings being built. I grew up with the buildings and knew where we were going. “

The 68-year-old Fourman, accompanied to the reception by roommate Sandy Metzcar and surrounded by co-workers, administration, residents and family members, said she has a few animals on her acre of ground. She has three alpacas, three miniature donkeys, a bunch of chickens, three dogs and two cats.

“They’re my life…the reason I”m working,” she said. “I’m supporting my habit.”

In addition, Fourman likes working in the garden, tinkering with woodworking and yard work…anything outside.

She grew up in Arcanum, daughter and youngest child of the late Marlin and Thelma Fourman. She has a brother, Alan Fourman and a sister, Judy Thayer.

Co-worker Jeanette Lewis watched as Fourman was receiving well wishes and remarked, “I call her the walking BRC because she knows everything. When she’s off, I feel I need her.”

“I plan on working until I’m 70 if I’m in good health,” Fourman concluded.
