PITSBURG — Franklin Monroe advanced to the championship game of the 51st Jet Holiday Tournament by beating Ansonia Friday night by a convincing score of 56-20. Leading the way for FM was Travis Feitshans with 19 points.
Taking on the Jets was Mississinawa Valley, who earned the spot with a come-from-behind win over Arcanum 67-61. The Hawks put three players in double-figure scoring in that game as Dalton Rinderle led with 15, Carson Stump 14, and Devon Rinderle added 13.
The Jets came out smoking in the nightcap as Travis Feitshans rained a trey and followed with a one and one to go up 6-0. The Hawks got on the board on fielder by Cayden Cox at the 4:34 mark trailing 8-2.
FM continued to make plays in the opening quarter with scoring across the board from Trey Mong inside, Zach Hyre, Martin Maksvytis outside and couple of drives by Devin Fourman and Marcus Horner to build a 21-12 first quarter advantage.
Mississinawa stayed within striking distance due to the outside shooting of senior Dane Blumenstock and junior Dalton Rinderle.
In the second quarter Cesar Delgado gave the Hawks a boost off the bench with six points and the Hawks starting to close the gap after back-to-back triples by Blumenstock and Devan Rinderle, getting to 27-22 with three minutes to go.
Franklin Monroe sophomore Zach Hyre closed out the half with a couple of nice drives to the basket and 33-24-halftime lead.
After Trey Mong got the scoring started in the third period, MV scored six straight points as Dalton Rinderle hit a couple of jumpers and senior Jacob Breymier connected as well to narrow the Jets lead to 35-30, prompting FM coach Troy Myers to call a timeout.
It would be seniors Travis Feitshans and Devin Fourman scoring consecutive buckets that quelled Mississinawa’s momentum. Another Feitshans goal on a nice post move off the block increased the Jets lead to 44-32 with 1:32 to go in the third quarter.
Back came the Blackhawks as Blumenstock scored on a drive to the basket and followed with a triple to close out the third period to again keep still within striking distance, trailing 44-37.
“We played FM earlier this year, and I thought tonight we played better the first three quarters than the first time around,” Mississinawa head coach Rodney Saintignon said.
But in the final stanza the Jets soared to a higher altitude as Hyre scored the first four points followed by a lay-up from Horner. A turn around jumper by Mong and five points from Devin Fourman helped open up a 56-38 advantage and the largest lead of the game with 3:30 to play.
“We sort of let things get out of hand in the fourth quarter … but you have to give credit to FM; they are a really good basketball team and shot the ball well tonight. I’m proud of our kids they battled and made a few runs … but we just couldn’t get over the hump,” Saintignon said.
Mississinawa was never really able to recover the rest of the way as the Jets went on to the 60-46 win to claim the 2013 Jet Holiday Tournament title and their 14th overall.
FM head coach Troy Myers acknowledged the effort Mississinawa gave and talked about how they were able to overcome that effort.
“I feel like this win really happened before tonight, when you play teams like Mississinawa who won’t back down and play hard for four quarters, eventually good teams have to find a way to come out on top,” Myers said.
“I credit that the improvement season, the eight months before the season starts working hard as a group. Tonight it showed in the fourth quarter getting deflections and winning the 50/50 balls; we didn’t do that in the first half. When the game is on the line our guys know what to do,” Myers added.
Myers continued, “We love this tournament, and we will enjoy this win … but we won’t bask in it; there is lot of basketball yet to be played.”
The Jets were led in scoring by Travis Feitshans with 16 points, pacing three other Jets in double figures as Devin Fourman, Trey Mong and Zach Hyre all added 11 points each in the win as the Jets go to 8-0 on the year.
Dane Blumenstock led Mississinawa with 19 and Dalton Rinderle added 12 points.
Named to the Jet Holiday Tournament team from FM was Devin Fourman, Trey Mong and MVP Travis Feitshans, from Mississinawa it was Dalton Rinderle and Cayden Cox and Mason Garber from Arcanum.
