DARKE COUNTY — Both of this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week have helped their teams get on winning streaks with their great play recently.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Greenville boys basketball player Clay Guillozet and Arcanum girls basketball player Abbey O’Donnell.

Guillozet has been a leader for the Greenville basketball team, which went on a seven-game winning streak in December and January. The streak is the Green Wave’s best since the 1995-96 season.

Guillozet has been key to the Wave’s success as he leads the team in scoring with 17.5 points a game and 4.0 assists per game, both of which are second best in the Greater Western Ohio Conference North Division.

“I would say that we ask an awful lot of him every night, and I think he responds every night,” Greenville boys basketball coach Michael Bashore said. “He’s kind of our little emotional leader out of the floor as well.”

The Greenville sophomore forward also averages 5.5 rebounds a game, which is second best on the team and sixth best in the GWOC North.

“Clay can plan any of the five positions on the floor and know what he’s supposed to do,” Bashore said.

Guillozet is almost irreplaceable, Bashore said, but he also does a great job of getting his teammates involved in the game.

“He’s done a fantastic job of getting his teammates involved, and I think that’s what makes him great,” Bashore said.

Guillozet and the rest of the Green Wave players have worked really hard to get to where they are, Bashore said.

“With each win they get more and more confident that they belong out of the floor with anybody,” he said.

O’Donnell has helped the Arcanum girls start the season with a 12-4 overall record and 8-1 record in the Cross County Conference. The Lady Trojans haven’t lost a conference game since they opened league play against Miami East.

O’Donnell has been a big contributor for Arcanum with a team-leading 8.0 rebounds per game and 11.2 points per game, which is second on the team. Both are among the top five of all Darke County girls.

The Lady Trojan senior also averages 1.6 assists a game, which is third best for Arcanum.

“I’m proud of the athlete she has turned into her senior year on the basketball floor,” Arcanum girls basketball coach Rachel Fearon said. “She is definitely playing like it is her senior year and she knows it is coming to an end.”

In a big CCC win against Tri-Village on Thursday, O’Donnell scored 14 points and had six rebounds. She also held one of the county’s top five scorers, Krystal Falknor, to less than half her normal offensive output.

“She had an awesome game defensively,” Fearon said. “She held Falknor to five points (Thursday). That was huge for us.”

Against Brookville on Monday, O’Donnell had 10 points and eight rebounds. And against Troy Christian on Jan. 18, she had 13 points and 12 rebounds in an overtime victory.

“Her senior leadership is really showing through, and she’s doing a great job teaching these younger girls what it takes,” Fearon said.

O’Donnell does whatever it takes to win and displays great leadership as one of two seniors on the team. She’s all all-around great player who can score, rebound and defend well, Fearon said.

“That means so much to our team,” Fearon said. “I think it helps everybody around her become that much better of a ball player.”
