COLUMBUS — Two Versailles wrestlers secured spots on the podium on Friday at the 77th annual Ohio High School Athletic Association state wrestling tournament at the Scottenstein Center in Columbus.

First, senior 126 pounder Matt Mangen overcame a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Zack Durbin of Ashland Mapleton in the quarterfinals by defeating Montpelier’s Sean Taylor with an impressive 9-5 win in the consolation bracket.

Mangen, who can finish as high as third and no lower than eighth place, will look to continue his climb up the podium on Saturday against Tim Mecklenburg of Rocky River Lutheran West.

No sooner did Mangen get off the mat, teammate Kyle Dieringer walked on to battle Hudson Cole of Magnolia Sandy Valley in a 195 pound match.

And after surrendering a first period takedown, Dieringer dominated en route to an impressive 8-2 win.

He’ll face Lima Central Catholic’s Jack Huffman on Saturday morning as he looks to finish as high as third place. The two are familiar with one another as Huffman placed third in the Troy district, while Dieringer placed second.

The two Tiger wrestlers will resume wrestling at 10 a.m. Saturday.
