MARIA STEIN — Greenville’s Clay Guillozet and Versailles’ Conner Custenborder and Jared Niekamp competed in the Maria Stein Country Fest’s third annual Quarterback Challenge on Saturday evening.

The competition included 17 quarterbacks representing 10 schools from the Greater Western Ohio Conference, Midwest Athletic Conference and Western Buckeye League including Coldwater, Fort Recovery, Greenville, Lima Shawnee, Marion Local, Parkway, Sidney, St. Henry, St. Marys and Versailles.

“It was a lot of fun,” Greenville junior Clay Guillozet, the Green Wave’s varsity starting quarterback, said. “It’s fun getting out here with everybody, getting to throw around and meet guys from other schools.”

Fort Recovery sophomore Caleb Martin won the competition, joining Versailles’ Nick Campbell in 2012 and Parkway’s Austin Dennison in 2013 as event winners. Martin is the youngest competitor to win the challenge in its three years.

The top of the final standings was dominated by sophomores. After Martin, Coldwater junior Jack Hemmelgarn finished second, St. Henry sophomore Nathan Lefeld finished third, Sidney sophomore Jack Feazel finished fourth, and St. Marys sophomore Reid Leiniger finished fifth. The top three finishers earned $250, $150 and $100 respectively for their schools’ athletics departments.

Versailles’ Niekamp, a junior, finished 10th; Versailles’ Custenborder, a sophomore, finished 13th; and Greenville’s Guillozet finished 15th.

The competition included five rounds with two rounds of stationary targets, two rounds of moving targets and one round of a distance throw.

Fort Recovery’s Martin excelled in the moving target rounds with 275 points in both rounds — the best of any competitor.

In the stationary targets, St. Henry’s Lefeld was the best as he led all competitors with 100 points in the first round and added 200 in the next round. Fort Recovery junior Darien Sheffer had a score of 225 in the second stationary target — the best of the day.

Coldwater senior Greg Gilliland was the best in the distance throw. He was credited with a throw of 50 yards in the round, which included deductions for missing a center line.

Greenville’s Guillozet got better as the competition went on and did best in the moving target rounds.

Versailles’ Custenborder and Niekamp did well in the stationary rounds. Niekamp also had a strong first attempt with the moving target and had the third best long throw of 45 yards.

Niekamp said his favorite part of the competition was the long throw while Custenborder and Guillozet both enjoyed the moving target.

A replay of the Quarterback Challenge will air on WOSN from Lima at 8 p.m. Tuesday and other times in the future. The station also can be watched online at www.wosn.tv.
