ARCANUM — Andrew Ashbaugh has taken over the chief of police’s position at Arcanum, his old stomping grounds, now that Dan Light has retired.

Ashbaugh, a 1993 Arcanum High School graduate, had been serving as New Madison’s part-time police chief since March 2009.

“I started working in July 1998 as a patrol officer [in New Madison],” Ashbaugh said.

Why did he get into law enforcement in the first place?

“I wanted to give back to the community and protect people who cannot protect themselves,” he said. “It was something I thought about but actually started my college career in engineering. Then, through the Office of Student Employment at Sinclair, I worked as a security officer for the police department. I thought to myself, ‘I want to do this,’ and went to Sinclair academy.”

He also attended Wright State University’s police academy.

“Now, I can’t imagine doing anything else,” he said.

At New Madison, Ashbaugh was one of 10 officers, four being part-time including himself and the other six on the auxiliary.

He had the opportunity to for the Arcanum Police Department in February as a patrol officer and, then through Light’s retirement announcement, let them knew he was interested.

“I interviewed with the mayor,” he said.

Ashbaugh was asked if he wants to make any changes in Arcanum.

“I don’t see anything glaring I’d like to change,” he replied. “One thing is we’re looking at starting a neighborhood watch program at this time.”

Ashbaugh said he has been enjoying working with Chief Light.

“He was excellent to work with,” Ashbaugh said. “I was never a chief before, and he helped me out a great deal with my position in New Madison with guidance and so forth. I couldn’t have done that without him.”

The new Arcanum chief is one of four children of David and Sandy Ashbaugh and is married to the former Stephanie Railsback, whom he met while a police officer in New Madison. She worked at the local grocery at the time.

The couple have three children, Logan, 10, Michela, 6, and Morgan, 4.

His siblings are Jennifer Cain and Justin and Alex Ashbaugh.

His entire family is supportive of his work in law enforcement.

In his spare time, Ashbaugh enjoys fishing, hunting, shooting and spending time with his children.
