GREENVILLE - With the first Friday of the month falling on July 4, Main Street Greenville has moved First Fridays to this week, and will host a slew of activities including a petting zoo, volunteer fair and Theatre on Third, a free outdoor movie which will feature Disney’s Frozen on Friday.
Lunch on the Lawn at the Greenville Public Library will start First Fridays off at 11:30 a.m. with an option for a boxed lunch by The Coffee Pot for $7, or bring a lunch to enjoy while listening to Noah Back, the entertainment for the day. The fun’s over at 1 p.m. The event will move to 111 Devor St. in case of inclement weather or extreme heat.
Many of the businesses located downtown will stay open late for the event, which includes a petting zoo and volunteer fair from 6-9 p.m., sponsored by Keller Grain & Feed. The petting zoo will be located on the Courthouse lawn.
The volunteer fair, a partnership with the Darke County Volunteer Network, will also feature 20 non-profit organizations offering a family-friendly activity, while sharing information about the work they do to make Darke County even better through the help of volunteers.
“After learning more about their missions, we encourage you to get involved and become a volunteer! It is a great way to connect to your community and help make a difference!” said a representative.
The following organizations will be set-up downtown: Keller Grain & Feed and Main Street Greenville: petting zoo; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County: necklace and bracelet making; Brethren Retirement Community: lollipop tree; Cancer Association of Darke County: bowling game; Darke County CERT and Skywarn: visit with search and rescue dogs; Darke County Chapter American Red Cross: citizen CPR training and fishing game; Darke County Parks: visit with their great horned owl and red tailed hawk; Darke County Recovery Services: basketball hoop; Darke County Special Olympics: bean bag scoop toss; Darke County United Way: fruit loop necklace making; FISH Choice Pantry: fishing game; Garst Museum: trivia contest; NextStep Ministries (EUM Church): temporary tattoos; RSVP: four man skis; Safehaven, Inc.: cornhole game; State of the Heart Hospice: putt-putt golf; Village Green Healthcare Center: bracelet making.
Following all of that will be Theatre on Third, which will be projected on to the elementsLife building on Third Street, while guests enjoy the Disney film Frozen from the parking lot behind Bach to Rock. The movie will begin around dusk (between 9-9:30 p.m.). Theater on Third is free and open to all, sponsored by Greenville National Bank. Guests are asked to bring lawn chairs, blankets, friends and family to enjoy.
Downtown businesses are getting involved in the fun as well, offering promotions or activities in their spaces! Check out the following, with many other downtown businesses staying open late for the evening: Workshop Learning Center - crafts on Walnut, featuring a wide variety of vendors and live music by the learning center’s string trio (213 Walnut St.); First Presbyterian Church - free ice cream (114 E. 4th St.); The Coffee Pot - live music by Matt Owens from 7-9 p.m.; Artifacts, Ink - 40 percent off scrapbooking supplies and antiques; Greenville National Bank - duck pond game, balloons, and grilling out free hot dogs and hamburgers; Youniques - chair massages and summer clearance sale; Montage Cafe - open late for the evening; The Double M Diner - open late for the evening; Countryside Bike Shop - free bicycle service, oiling chain and air in tires; Pamela’s Intimate Apparel - 50 percent off selected swimwear; First Heavy Metal Church of Christ - live music; and Bread of Life Christian Bookstore - live music and popcorn!
The fun continues Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the downtown Greenville Farmer’s Market, with plenty of local options, from eggs, breads and meat to crafts and produce, there’s a little bit of something for everyone.
