Kasich plans to announce presidential bid in July

COLUMBUS – Gov. John Kasich will announce his presidential intentions during an event at Ohio State University next month, a spokesman for his campaign confirmed late Sunday night.

Chris Schrimpf, who has fielded press questions for Kasich’s New Day for America nonprofit, declined to offer specifics, other than make reference Kasich’s website (www.johnkasich.com).

An invitation posted Sunday on that site notes “A Special Announcement” taking place in Columbus on July 21, with a signup option to receive tickets to attend or watch online.

The website is backed by a new campaign group, “Kasich for America.”

Associated Press, The Cincinnati Enquirer and other media outlets reported late Sunday that Kasich planned to make his 2016 presidential run official during the event.

That would bring to fruition months of buildup for Kasich’s entrance into a crowded GOP primary field that includes more than a dozen potential candidates.

The governor has spent much time in recent weeks outside of Ohio, making multiples stops in New Hampshire and South Carolina and speaking at events in a handful of other states as he tested the waters for a potential campaign.

He established his New Day for America nonprofit group in April. The tax-exempt political organization provided a means for accepting contributions without formally announcing his candidacy.

Kasich topped Democrat Hillary Clinton among possible 2016 candidate match-ups in Ohio, but he still isn’t registering much support in Florida and Pennsylvania, according to polls released by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute earlier this month.
