PITSBURG — The Arcanum Trojans found themselves in the consolation game of the Jet Tournament after dropping a 67-61 decision to Mississinawa Valley Friday night as they were unable to hold onto a 15-point lead.
Mason Garber had a big night against the Hawks, scoring 20 points, and fellow team members Colin Habel had 12 and Dalton Lindemuth and Brandon Fourman both netted 10 points each in that game.
Ansonia found its way to the consolation game after falling to a stingy Franklin Monroe team by the score of 56-20.
In the consolation game Arcanum got on the scoreboard first on a trey by sophomore Kory Baker in what would be an historic night for the junior guard. Baker and Mason Garber connected on a couple more triples and Brandon Fourman closed out the scoring in the first quarter with a couple of fielders as the Trojans held a 16-8 lead.
Ansonia tried to keep pace behind junior Trey Fisher with a couple of fielders along with a bucket from Wyatt Gasper and Nick Peters.
After hitting two treys in the first quarter, Baker hit three in the second frame while Mason Garber and cast did damage inside as Arcanum took a 35-19 lead at intermission.
And if things weren’t bad enough for Ansonia, they were about to get worse.
Arcanum torched the nets in the third period for 25 points and clamped down defensively, holding the Tigers to just three points and blowing the game open 60-22.
Baker started the second half as he did the game with a trey and wasn’t finished; he connected on another at 4:50 the seventh of the night, tying the single game Jet Tournament record (previously held by Ben Shappie and Kyle Gehl of Versailles), and then at 4:33 from the corner breaking the record with eight on the night.
In the final stanza with the game in-hand, the only drama was whether or not the Trojans would break the single game record for threes, which was 17 set by Versailles back in 2003.
Arcanum came up short … but ended with a team total of 14 on the night to claim the consolation game doubling up Ansonia 74-37.
Kory Baker led Arcanum with 27, points and Mason Garber added 17. The Tigers got 13 points from Dane Wentworth.
Arcanum boys basketball head coach Brian Gunter was happy with his team’s effort.
“Tonight we did a good job in our transition game both on defense and offense, which we stressed in a walk around today. If we would have done that the night before, we very well could have been playing in the title game,” Gunter said.
“We pushed the ball on the break up the sidelines for some easy baskets. Our execution in the inside/outside game was good, and we made the extra pass, forcing their zone to use two defenders to guard one giving us open shot opportunities,” Gunter added.
“Officially we had 25 assists so it was a total team effort tonight. It was that kind of effort that gave Kory Baker the opportunity to break the single game individual 3-point record. “He (Baker) is probably one of the best shooters in the area when he gets his feet set and what an accomplishment it was,” Gunter said.
“It was nice to see Kory on tonight … but I was also pleased to see Dalton Lindemuth, Connor Pohl, Cole Burrell, Colton Troutwine and Mason Garber all connect from behind the arch as well. We made 14 threes, which is quite a feat and doesn’t happen unless we do a lot of things right,” Gunter said.
Mason Garber was named to the all tournament team with a two game total of 37 points.
“He’s a four-year player in our program and our only senior so we count on his leadership; he had a nice tournament, and this was a nice honor for him to be on the Jet Tourney team,” Gunter concluded.
