ANSONIA – The Ansonia Lady Tigers let one slip away, losing 40-44 to the Covington Buccs on Saturday.
“Covington did a good job. They were aggressive,” Ansonia varsity girls basketball coach Jim Bolin said. “They came back several times. We had them down several times. We had them where we wanted them.”
Ansonia jumped out to a 3-0 first quarter lead on a Lydia Sink 3-pointer at 7:12 on the clock. Sink broke a 6-6 tie with a steal and drive to the basket, giving Ansonia an 8-6 lead heading to second quarter play.
The Lady Tigers took a 12-6 lead in the first 1:30 of the second quarter with Abby Helmke hitting a bucket from the top of the key followed with a Gayla Crabtree basket with an assist from Catey Fischer.
Fisher gave Ansonia an eight-point lead at 18-10, scoring with and assist from Sink at 2:22 on the clock.
The Lady Tigers held a 20-14 lead at 1:01 in the second period on a Sink drive to the basket.
Five unanswered Buccs points brought the first half to a close with the Tigers clinging to a one-point lead at 20-19.
“Initially we would stop them, then they would get four or five put-backs. Eventually one of them is going to fall in,” Bolin said. “We just didn’t block out like we normally do. They rebounded, and they got the extra baskets.”
Fischer scored on a stick back, giving Ansonia a 30-23 third quarter lead with 1:24 showing on the clock.
Covington out scored the Tigers 7-0 over the final 1:14 of the third period with two free throws, a bucket at 0:35 and a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 30-30 score heading to the final period of play.
“I told the girls we were a better team than we showed tonight, but you have to go out and play it and show it,” Bolin said.
The Buccs quickly jumped out to a 34-30 lead, extending the lead to five points at 41-36 with 0:57 to play.
Ansonia senior Catey Fischer cut Covington’s lead to 41-40 at 0:27, hitting a free throw and following up with a stick back and free throw.
Trailing by one with seconds to play, Ansonia was forced to foul, sending a fine free throw shooting Lady Buccs team to the line, hitting 4-4 down the stretch and eight-of-10 in the fourth period a to take a 44-40 win over the Lady Tigers.
“I don’t think they missed too many (free throws) at all. They were 21-28,” Bolin said. “Free throws are very important at the end of the game. We can look at the stats sheet and tell who won the game by looking at free throws, rebounds and turnovers.”
The Buccs won the battle at the free throw line going 21-28 while Ansonia was 7-13.
Catey Fischer led all scorers in the game with 17 points.
