DARKE COUNTY — Both of this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week have been great all season and have stepped up even more the past couple weeks.
This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Tri-Village boys basketball player Colton Linkous and Versailles girls swimmer Amber Seibert.
Linkous has stepped up big for Tri-Village this season as he moved into a starting role.
He is second on Tri-Village’s team with 20.8 points a game, which also is third best in Darke County. Additionally he is third on his team with 6.5 rebounds a game and third with 3.9 assists per game, both of which are among the top 10 in the county.
Linkous had a huge offensive presence for the Patriots last weekend, scoring 30 points against Tri-County North and 32 against Miami Valley. Against Miami Valley Linkous made 10 3-pointers to set a school record.
“I though he had a tremendous weekend,” Tri-Village boys basketball coach Josh Sagester said. “When you make a total of 16 threes in two games, that’s a pretty good performance.”
And it wasn’t just his offensive effort that was great, Sagester said, as Linkous is an all-around basketball player.
“He also made some players and teammates better with finding the open man as well and did a tremendous job on the defensive end,” the coach said.
Linkous is having a great year because he constantly devotes the time and effort to get better, Sagester said.
“If the gym’s open, he finds it,” Sagester said. “He’s the epitome of what you put in, you get out.”
Seibert has been among Darke County’s best swimmers in multiple events this season.
Seibert has the best time among Darke County girls in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:10.50. She also is second in the 50-yard freestyle at 26.41 and second in the 100-yard freestyle at 55.40.
“Amber usually swims the 100 breaststroke and 50- or 100-yard freestyle, although, she has been known to swim the 200 IM and 100 butterfly as well,” Versailles swimming coach Penny Cromwell said.
Seibert won the 100-yard breaststroke, was second in the 100-yard freestyle and was on the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays to help lead Versailles to the championship in the Lima Holiday Invitational.
“Amber, a senior, has performed well in dual and tri-meets as well,” Cromwell said. “Last year, Amber qualified for state competition as a member of three relays and she wants to compete at state again this year.”
In a tri-meet against Carlisle and New Bremen, Seibert won the 100-yard butterfly and won the 100-yard breaststroke. She also was part of Versailles’ winning 200-yard medley relay team and the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.
