AKRON — Tri-Village alumnus Clayton Murphy won the mile race Saturday at the Mid-American Conference indoor championships, helping to lead the Akron men’s track and field team to the conference title.

Murphy won the mile with a time of 4:08.69. The Akron freshman also finished second to teammate Kyle Cochrun in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:20.33.

Two weeks earlier Murphy broke Akron’s record in the mile for the second week in a row. He won the event at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., in 4:02.04, breaking his own record of 4:05.18 that he set a week earlier at the Akron Invitational.

During the cross country season Murphy earned second team all-MAC honors. The son of Mark and Melinda Murphy placed 13th at the conference meet with a time of 25:29.37, finishing third among the Akron runners.

He led the Zips at each of his first three collegiate cross country meets by finishing third at the Tommy Evans Invitational with a 4-mile time of 20:28, finished 176th at the Bluegrass Invitational with a time of 24:40.05 in the 8K and finished fourth at the All-Ohio Championships with a time of 25:19.13.
