MINSTER — The Bradford softball team split its games at a four-team tournament in Minster on Friday, beating Riverside and losing to Minster.
In the first game Bradford matched up with Riverside, which ended in a 5-1 Railroader victory.
It was a slow start for the Railroaders, who did not score until the third inning when Haley Patty hit a one-out single and stole second. Erika Hart drove her in with a single up the middle.
Then again in the fourth inning the Railroaders got it going with a leadoff triple by senior Brooke Dunlevy followed up by a single by junior Kylie Miller. She was driven in by Tori Smith
Bradford tacked a couple more runs on in the fifth by another single by Hart and a double by Brook Brower, again being drove in by Miller.
Erika Hart went 3-for-4 and Kylie Miller 2-for-2. Also recording hits were Patty, Brower and Dunlevy.
Smith went the distance, giving up five hits and striking out eight.
The second game against Minster, who beat Russia 14-2 in the first game, was a defensive battle by two really good teams.
Bradford took the early lead by a single by Dunlevy and base on balls by Ally Booker, Michayla Barga and Kelly Moore.
“We had opportunities to put some more runs on the board but just couldn’t get it done,” Bradford softball coach Shon Schaffer said.
The Roaders outhit the Wildcats five to three but came up short on the scoreboard, 3-1.
“We have to get better defensively,” coach Schaffer said. “We can’t give away runs like that against good teams.”
Minster scored all of its runs on errors, two on passed balls.
