ANSONIA — The Ansonia softball team beat Triad 8-1 in an Ohio High School Athletic Association sectional tournament game in Ansonia.
“I think we’re playing pretty good right now,” Ansonia coach Floyd Jenkins said. “I think they’re focused. They came out and they was ready. I think they really surprised Triad. I think this is the best game I’ve seen them put together all year long.”
Ansonia got off to a fast start with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and three in the third for a 5-0 lead. Triad cut into the lead with a run in the top of the fifth before the Tigers added three more runs in the bottom half of the inning for the 8-1 win.
Catey Fischer was the winning pitcher for Ansonia, striking out three and allowing just three hits. The Tiger defense also was strong behind her, Jenkins said.
“I thought we played sound tonight,” he said. “We played outstanding defense as a team.”
Ansonia had nine hits in the game. Allison Phillippi was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four RBI.
Taylor Thwaits had a single, a walk and scored two runs. Haley Wamper had a double, a walk and scored two runs.
Holli Hammaker had a single, two sacrifices and scored a run. Fischer had a single and scored a run.
Ansonia now advances to play Bradford in the sectional championship game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Fairlawn. Last year Ansonia beat Bradford 2-1 in the sectional championship game, and this year the Tigers beat the Railroaders 4-3 in the regular season.
