Versailles News: No such thing as a free meal

0

Did you know there is such a thing as a free meal? It is part of the Senior Resource Connection program, better known as “Meals on Wheels”. Most of us are somewhat familiar with the “Meals on Wheels” program, but did you know anyone age 60 or older can enjoy a free breakfast Monday through Friday? It’s true! Thanks to a special program the Wooden Spoon offers 10 different breakfast combinations Monday through Friday from 7 – 11 a.m. The only catch is you or your spouse must be age 60 or over to qualify and you need only fill out a one-time simple form at the restaurant.

So what’s better than a free meal? How about a good meal and friendly conversation? I believe the Wooden Spoon provides both. During the morning hours you’ll recognize many familiar faces from Versailles, Ansonia and Greenville, and the noise level is bordering ridiculous because of the multiple conversations taking place.

Terry Buteau, owner of the Wooden Spoon (some of us remember it as the Annie Oakley restaurant), located at 9690 State Route 127, Greenville, explained how the program gets seniors out of the house and allows them to socialize. Buteau noted that the Spoon is the only restaurant in Darke County offering this program, and they have been doing so since the fall of 2014. There is a $2 suggestion contribution but it is never mandatory.

This service is also offered in Montgomery, Greene, and Miami Counties Monday through Friday. For more information regarding the program and locations, please call 937-228-Food (3663) or 1-888-580-3663. The program is funded by the Area Agency on Aging PSA2.
