Versailles News

The last two Friday Versailles columns were bumped due to lack of space and, of course, my last two columns were time sensitive discussing weekend events, which eventually published became outdated. I apologize to the readers who missed the Right to Life Community Sale and the Versailles FareFest events. These events were no longer valid by Monday and therefore edited out of the column.

Last week’s column “Fair vs. Fare” was especially disjointed since it was a witty attempt to compare and contrast the Darke County Fair and the Versailles FareFest, but after editing nothing regarding the FareFest remained. The good news is there is always next year…the 8th Annual Versailles FareFest, and of course the 160th Great Darke County Fair.

Another event that may not have reached you in time was the YMCA Sneak Peek of the fall classes at the Greenville YMCA. It was a great way to try the new classes being offered. Fall classes will begin Monday and some of the new classes include: POUND, Raise the Barre Toning (ballet exercises), REFIT®, Tabata Circuit Training, Boot Camp, Lunch Crunch, Zumba in the round, and Yoga/Stretching for beginners.

Well it all boils down to timing, news isn’t new if it’s old. Time waits for no one but we must wait for our time, chance or opportunity. We cannot legally drive, vote or file for social security until we reach the appropriate age. Timing is required in singing, dancing and joke telling. Timing is also important in gambling, investing, and dealing with people. Volatile is volatile whether it’s describing the market or people.

Prevention and cooking requires timing. Closing the barn door after the cows have gotten out is an example of bad timing. Installing locks to a house after a burglary might prevent future thefts but sooner would have avoided any loss. Timing is important on a couple of levels when baking bread. We must allow the bread to rise before baking it and then bake it for the proper length of time otherwise we will be left with wasted effort.

Timing is also important and needed in sports. It takes timing to run hurdles, execute an offensive play, pitch and hit. Even childhood games like hide and seek and jumping rope requires timing. In fact jumping rope is a great training aid to improve one’s timing, agility quickness and footwork, in addition to athletic endurance.

Before TiVo or digital video recorders (DVRs) timing was important for watching our favorite television show. Ed Sullivan was only on Sunday evenings at 8:00 pm, if we missed it there was no opportunity to see it again. Believe you, me, we didn’t want to miss it because a week without Topo Gigio was like years not days to a child.

Perhaps timing is truly everything. It seems to be an integral aspect of daily life. Every one of us has a biological clock and none of us could function properly in this world without our alarm clocks and other timing devices. From punching time cards to attending happy hour timing is everything. Since we cannot TiVo life yet (and I really hope that never happens) we need to accept and enjoy life as it happens. After all there’s no time like the present.
