BRADFORD – The Bradford girls basketball program hosted a junior high shootout with seven teams on Saturday.

Along with Bradford, Cross County Conference members Ansonia, Tri-Village and Twin Valley South competed in the shootout. Also, Springfield, Springfield Catholic Central and Xenia had teams compete, all playing four games.

“I think it went pretty well,” Bradford varsity girls basketball coach Patrick McKee said. “For what we had it was pretty competitive.”

Because of other activities such as softball tournaments and vacations, Bradford’s squad only had five players competing on Saturday. However, McKee said the players coming through the Lady Railroaders’ program are really athletic and have him very excited about the future of the program.

“It’s only going to make them better for their season to come,” McKee said about the players who participated in the shootout.

Bradford has had some ups and downs in its girls basketball program. The team is trying to work its way back to the success of the 2013-14 season when the Railroaders advanced to the district finals of the Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament before losing to Fort Loramie, who ended up advancing to the state final four.

Any amount of time the girls can spend working on their game will only help the team as it builds itself back up.

“At the end of the day it’s really just about getting these kids playing time,” McKee said.

The Lady Railroaders’ summer basketball activities are mostly wrapped up, McKee said. The team will host a youth camp at the end of the month.
