Versailles football team faces St. Henry in a 7-on-7 scrimmage

VERSAILLES – The Versailles football team faced Midwest Athletic Conference rival St. Henry in its final seven-on-seven scrimmage of the year on Monday evening.

Because of the MAC’s scheduling structure, Versailles and St. Henry will not play each other in varsity football this season.

The scrimmage against St. Henry was Versailles’ first competition against an opposing team since the Tigers’ seven on seven at Tipp City on July 8 when they faced Alter, Bethel, Lehman Catholic, Miami East, Northwestern and Tippecanoe.

“I think we looked pretty good,” Versailles coach Adam Miller said of Monday’s scrimmage. “Offensively, defensively, I thought we looked sound. The biggest thing we want to see is improvement from the last time we practiced the seven on seven.”

In the weeks since the scrimmage at Tippecanoe, Miller said he did see improvement out of his team.

“I think we were executing better,” he said. “We feel like the kids know what they’re doing, and now they’re getting more comfortable. We’re executing better, and we’re just hoping to see more improvement as the season goes on.”

As Versailles wraps up the camp portion of its summer, the Tigers still have several questions to answer such as who will replace Jared Niekamp as their starting quarterback. Multiple players took snaps on Monday at quarterback as Versailles continues to sort through its options.

“There’s a couple positions still up for grabs,” Miller said. “Quarterback is one that we’re still not sure who’s going to step up. We gave quite a few reps out today to try to see who can shine.”

With July practices complete, Miller is looking forward to August when his team can put on full pads and really start preparing for the upcoming season.

“We’re ready to be putting the pads on, and then we can really evaluate what the players can do,” he said.
