Blinn leads basketball camp

TIPP CITY – Former Greenville High School and University of Illinois basketball player Macie Blinn led a girls basketball clinic on Friday at Bethel High School.

Blinn worked with Jim Dabbelt, who reports on and promotes girls basketball through his website, The Dabbelt Report, to lead the camp.

Almost 50 girls in the fifth through eighth grades attended the one-day camp. Most of the girls were from the Miami Valley, although some came from as far away as Cleveland.

“I think it was very beneficial for them, especially with Jim Dabbelt having connections,” Blinn said. “It can only help them being out here.”

Blinn excelled at Greenville and three times was named all-Ohio by The Associated Press, averaging 22.5 points per game as a senior. She set Lady Wave records for points in a game, season and career.

After graduating high school in 2008, Blinn played four seasons at Illinois. She started 32 games during her college career and was named Academic All-Big Ten three times.

Blinn now is a substitute teacher and tutor. She coaches an AAU basketball team, which recently completed its season, and also is the junior varsity girls basketball coach at Vandalia-Butler.

Dabbelt approached Blinn a couple months ago about running Friday’s camp, which was the first time she led a camp, she said. Blinn put the girls through drills that focused on ball handling, passing and shooting, and they also played in several games.

“I put together six hours of drills,” Blinn said. “He told me I was in charge of doing drills. I did a lot of college drills. We did a few that we do in Vandalia. I had my girls helping so we put together a plan, and it worked. I think everybody enjoyed it. We had a good time, and I think these girls got better.”

Blinn said she was thankful for the opportunity to run the camp and thought it went well for everyone involved.

“It was definitely great,” Blinn said. “I had a really good time, and I’m proud of the way that they worked.”
