Versailles’ Brigette Holsapple, Tri-Village’s Gavin Richards named athletes of the week

DARKE COUNTY – A pair of athletes who are finishing strong during their senior seasons are this week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week.

This week’s Daily Advocate athletes of the week are Tri-Village boys basketball player Gavin Richards and Versailles girls bowler Brigette Holsapple.

Holsapple has bowled well all season but has come on very strong toward the end of the season when Versailles really needed her.

In the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference divisional playoffs the Versailles senior rolled games of 202 and 168 and was the team’s anchor in helping the Lady Tigers beat Wapakoneta.

“She’s done real well,” Versailles bowling coach Tyler Phlipot said. “She’s been real consistent. She does what we tell her. She’s worked hard at her hard to achieve her goals and the team goals.”

This week in the Ohio High School Athletic Association sectional tournament she finished 12th overall with games of 175, 161 and 170. She also was the anchor in half of the Baker games, helping Versailles win the sectional championship.

“She stepped up big the last two weeks,” Phlipot said.

For the season Holsapple is third among all Darke County girls with a 172.0 average per game this season. Her positive attitude and hard work allow her to be such a successful bowler, Phlipot said.

“She listens and she does what we tell her to do,” he said. “She’s a hard worker.”

Versailles is looking for another strong performance from Holsapple in the district tournament as the Tigers seek another appearance at state.

“I think we’re looking real good,” Phlipot said. “I think no doubt she can keep it going with her attitude.”

Richards is fourth among all Darke County basketball players with 20.2 points per game this season. He’s also one of the county’s leaders with 4.1 rebounds per game and 3.5 assists per game.

“He’s been a stat sheet stuffer for the majority of his career,” Tri-Village boys basketball coach Josh Sagester said. “Not only that, many nights he draws the toughest perimeter assignment on the floor (on defense).”

In a game against Greeneview on Tuesday, Richards scored his 1,000th career point, becoming just the seventh player in Tri-Village boys basketball history to reach the milestone.

“I think it’s a great accomplishment,” Sagester said. “It’s a culmination of a lot of hard work when nobody else is watching.”

Richards is extremely athletic and versatile. The Tri-Village senior always has been good at getting to the rim and finishing, Sagester said, but he’s elevated his game by becoming a strong perimeter shooter.

“Gavin’s had a tremendous career as a Patriot,” Sagester said. “Very versatile, very athletic crafty left-hander who can get to the rim and shoot the ball extremely well for us. Has been a good leader on the floor for us.”
