PITSBURG – Tuesday evening was step two for the Versailles Lady Tigers on the trail of the 2016-17 Ohio High School Athletic Association girls basketball tournament.

This time the opponent standing in the way of the Lady Tigers was the Lady Polar Bears of Northridge, who were 1-21 on the season. Versailles got down to business early and gave Northridge no hope of competing in the game as the Lady Tigers took down the Lady Polar Bears 67-19.

Versailles dominated from the opening whistle. A 14-0 run to begin the game left little doubt who was in control. The Lady Tigers’ offense put up 28 points in the first quarter while surrendering just 7.

The transition game began to take over in period two as fast breaks were the key in a 12-0 surge that led to a 43-11 intermission advantage.

Halftime did little to slow down the Versailles onslaught. Period three consisted of a 19-2 blitz for the Lady Tigers.

The Versailles defensive effort was all about effort. As usual the Lady Tigers put forth the hard work and desire necessary to play great defense. They allowed just 6 points in the second and third quarters combined.

“They like to play games more than they like to practice,” Versailles coach Jacki Stonebraker said. “For the most part, we came out pretty good. The two-three made us stand around too much in our offense, but … our rebounding was pretty good and we worked the ball around enough.

“Running the floor is huge,” Stonebraker continued. “Our big girls can run. Teams try to take that away. Our guards do a nice job falling in behind. Defensively, had some really good stops on the inside.”

Kami McEldowney led a balanced Lady Tiger attack with 15 points. The Winners, Danielle and Lindsey, each had 11 and Claire Schmitmeyer and Liz Ording each contributed 8.

Versailles will face Miami East at 11 a.m. Saturday at Franklin Monroe High School for the sectional championship. The two schools met Dec. 10 when the Lady Tigers bested the Lady Vikings 67-29.

“We’re two totally different teams at this point,” Coach Stonebraker said. “They’re playing more zone than before. There post players are stepping up, scoring more inside and freshman guards have grown up, taking the ball to the basket … need to get off to a good start Saturday.”
