5 Greenville wrestlers qualify for OHSAA district tournament

ST. PARIS – Five Greenville wrestlers qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II district wrestling tournament.

The Greenville wrestlers competed in the sectional tournament on Friday and Saturday at Graham High School. The Green Wave finished sixth out of the 12 competing teams in the Graham 2 sectional behind Eaton, Chaminade Julienne, Carroll, Oakwood and Urbana. The Wave beat Benjamin Logan, Middletown Madison, Springfield Shawnee, Tippecanoe, Ponitz and Trotwood-Madison.

Greenville sophomore Jacob Mikesell finished as the runner up in the 132 pound class to qualify for districts. He pinned Tippecanoe sophomore Lewis Abram in one minute, pinned Carroll senior Mackaylia Montgomery in 2:33, pinned Ponitz freshman Travis Hall in 3:25 and then lost to Eaton senior Coleman Manning in a 14-0 major decision.

Senior Christian Chalmers finished as the runner up in the 170 pound class to advance to the district tournament. He pinned Ponitz sophomore Kaliq Crutch in 1:30, pinned Carroll senior Noah Hoagland in 1:04 and then lost 12-8 to Eaton junior Seth Hodapp.

Junior Austin Lacey finished third in the 113 pound class to qualify for districts. He beat Oakwood freshman A.J. Lewandowski 9-2, lost 11-5 to Urbana senior Austin Murray and pinned Tippecanoe freshman Blake Ballard in 2:42.

Sophomore Jacob Goldsmith finished fourth in the 145 pound class to advance to the district tournament. He lost 18-11 to Oakwood senior Jakob Nelson-Mays, pinned Benjamin Logan sophomore Christian Keller in 3:44, pinned Tippecanoe sophomore Lucas Moore in 2:01 and was pinned by Urbana junior Damion Williams in 1:42.

Freshman Zane Mancillas finished fourth in the 182 pound class to qualify for the district tournament. He lost a 15-3 major decision to Carroll sophomore Trenton Randall, beat Ponitz sophomore David Lane in a 17-2 technical fall and then lost 3-1 to Carroll’s Randall.

Junior Landin Brown became the district alternate by finishing fifth in the 220 pound class. He was pinned by Tippecanoe senior Grant Carlson in 50 seconds, pinned Middletown Madison freshman Gabe Blevins in 1:12, was pinned by Oakwood junior Drake Miller in 48 seconds and pinned Urbana freshman Austin Fisher in 53 seconds.

Freshman Andrew Stachler finished sixth in the 106 pound class. He lost in a 16-0 technical fall to Springfield Shawnee sophomore Kaleb Ream, beat Oakwood sophomore Devin Lucas 9-3, was pinned by Urbana freshman Lucas Chess in 36 seconds and lost a 17-3 major decision to Chaminade Julienne freshman Jorden Zigo.

Sophomore Joseph Edwards finished sixth in the 138 pound class. He lost in a 20-5 technical fall to Chaminade Julienne junior Micah Marshall, pinned Eaton sophomore Cameron Schmidt in 45 seconds, was pinned by Benjamin Logan freshman Joel Abbott in 2:57 and was pinned by Oakwood junior Jake Burgard in 1:15.

Junior Jeffrey Shunk finished sixth in the 285 pound class. He was pinned by Middletown Madison freshman Joey Kendrick in 21 seconds, pinned by Eaton sophomore Seth Bowman in 27 seconds and was pinned by Middletown Madison’s Kendrick in 32 seconds.

In the 160 pound class freshman Tytan Grote lost a 19-10 major decision to Oakwood junior Carston King and was pinned by Springfield Shawnee junior Sam Matthews in 2:43.

Greenville’s district qualifiers will compete at the district tournament at Wilmington beginning at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
