Franklin Monroe softball team defeats Mississinawa Valley 8-1

PITSBURG – Emilee Morris struck out 12 Blackhawks as Franklin Monroe beat Mississinawa Valley 8-1 in a Cross County Conference softball game on Tuesday.

Emilee Morris allowed just one unearned run on four hits while striking out 12 batters for FM. That follows up a performance last week in which she struck out 14 against Bradford.

“She’s keeping us in games,” Franklin Monroe softball coach Mike Morris said. “Hopefully she can continue to throw strikes and keep the ball nice and low because a lot of good things happen when she keeps it low.”

While Coach Morris was happy with his team’s pitching, he was disappointed the Jets didn’t hit better.

“Offensively I’m very disappointed right now,” he said. “We’re just struggling hitting. I think we left 10 on again tonight. I’m just looking for that one hero to step up and want to be up to bat and drive the ball.”

Franklin Monroe was able to get three runs in the first inning without recording a hit. The Jets increased their lead to 4-0 in the second inning with a RBI triple by Kinsey Goins.

“They field the ball, and it’s a 0-0 game,” Coach Morris said. “We waited until the sixth inning to put up four more runs. These are the games that we should be fired up, ready to roll. It’s just like some of these games we think we’re going to walk all over people, and we’re not built for that. We’ve got to come out fired up every night, play our top game and pretend that they’re the best team in the state.”

In the sixth inning Franklin Monroe’s offense got going beginning with Emilee Morris getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Goins then doubled, and Brigette Filbrun drove in both runners with a two-run single.

Moments later after a single by Allie Armstrong and a walk to Nychelle Cool, Chloe Henninger drove in two runs to put Franklin Monroe up 8-0.

Mississinawa Valley managed to avoid the shutout when Jolie Elson drilled a triple into right field during the top half of the seventh inning. Franklin Monroe committed an error on the play, which allowed Elson to score and make the score 8-1.

“It was great,” Mississinawa Valley softball coach Ray Lutz said. “Once we start swinging the bat we can hit the ball. We had a lot of times tonight where we had opportunities and went down looking at strikes instead of swinging. That was a very nice play, good hit. Thankfully we didn’t get shut out.”

Elson led Mississinawa Valley with her triple. Kinsie Blocher, Amanda Jeffers and Lindsay Johns also had hits for MV.

“We had our ups and downs, didn’t play smart ball at times, and the score reflects that stuff,” Lutz said.

Goins was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and a RBI for Franklin Monroe. Armstrong went 2-for-4. Filbrun was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Henninger was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Chloe Peters had a hit and a sacrifice.
