VERSAILLES – The Versailles Tigers opened the season with an impressive victory over Celina on Friday night in Versailles.

The Tigers overcame an early 7-0 deficit to win 28-7. Senior running back Collin Peters led the Tigers with 175 yards and three touchdowns.

While the Tiger offense failed to score early, the defense swarmed to the ball and gave the offense good field position.

“Defense played outstanding,” Versailles football coach Adam Miller said. “I’m very impressed we held them to seven points.”

The Tiger running game got on track in the second quarter with Peters.

“We tell the kids we are going to wear them down and keep grinding,” Miller said. “Celina does a lot of stuff on defense, and they’re tough to prepare for.”

Peters had a 38-yard run to set the Tigers up at the Celina 19. The Tigers were helped by an offside penalty, and Peters scored on a 1-yard run to tie the game at 7-7.

The Tigers scored on a Jared Niekamp run with 3:11 left in the first half. The score was set up by a Bulldog turnover. A fumble on a pitch was recovered by Denver Toner, who pounced on the ball at the Bulldog 19-yard line.

The Tigers led at halftime 14-7.

The Tigers scored again in the third quarter in part to another fumble recovery.

Peters hit pay dirt from 12 yards out to put the Tigers up 21-7.

Peters sealed the game with a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:19 left in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers travel to Germantown Sept. 5 to take on Valley View. The Tigers won last year 31-27 in a game that took two days to complete.

The game was called due to lighting with a little over one minute to go in the fourth quarter as the Tigers took the lead. The Tigers kicked off and got two turnovers in the final minute to hold on to the victory.
