UNION CITY, Ohio —Sixty-four veterans registered for Wednesday morning’s program at Mississinawa Valley (MV) Schools.

They were treated to breakfast as well as a Veterans Day program which focused on them.

Amy Roessner, who organized this fifth annual event, said 160 people attended the breakfast, which was prepared by students, who also conducted most of the program which followed in the auditorium.

A special remembrance this year was a tribute to not only American soldiers and veterans but also to honoring and remembering Vietnam.

Veterans there represented the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Army. Eleven people stood to be recognized when asked who were Vietnam veterans.

The audience had the opportunity to view a brief documentary on Vietnam and the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall.

Also featured were a timeline of wars, presentation of preschool gifts and the singing of “Thank a Vet” sung by elementary students directed by Audrey Hathaway.

Students spoke during most of the program and were also among the greeters, breakfast servers and setup/cleanup crew.

“Diane Siefring came out of retirement and she and Annette Livingston coordinated the preparation and serving of the breakfast,” Roessner said.

The hallways of the school were decorated with veteran-related art work, and photos of local veterans were on exhibit in the glass case in the main hall.

“This gets bigger every year,” Roessner said. “This year we are donating $680.40 to the Wounded Warrior Project, coming from money at ballgames and dress-up days. The elementary student council helped at the football game and sold doughnuts to raise money and some students worked at parent-teacher conferences selling flags and stars, all for the Wounded Warrior Project.”

Superintendent Jim Atchley closed the program.
