GREENVILLE — Meladi Brewer, a junior at Versailles High School, would like to become an international news correspondent when she graduates from college.

So, she opted to job shadow at The Daily Advocate recently during Darke County Junior Job Shadow Week.

Junior Job Shadow Week, it was explained by Lisa J. Wendel, Career Pathway coordinator through Darke County Economic Development, is an event in which Darke County juniors are given an opportunity to participate in half-day job shadows with the goal of assisting students make informed career and education decisions. Organizing all the job shadowing during a single week encourages more students to participate while at the same time making it easier for organizations to be involved.

Brewer spent time with the editor and reporters in the newsroom, and even had the opportunity to go along to cover a case in the Darke County Common Pleas Court.

“I love English class,” said the teen, who is the daughter of James and Tracy (Potter) Brewer. “I enjoy writing in general…creative writing, poems. I like learning new things. I don’t like the same thing. They bore me.”

Her main goal is to go to different places and learn about them and their languages.

“I like doing something different everyday,” she went on. “And, the love of writing poses a little challenge.”

The college preparatory student is a varsity cheerleader in football and basketball, is a member of Interact, a community service group, and was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior. She has been in drama club since her sophomore year and was narrator for the musical, “Peter Pan,” her freshman year, and is performing in “Beauty and the Beast” this year.

“I got to go to London on New Year’s Day for cheerleading,” she said. “The architecture blew me away.”

When thinking about college, she has three in mind, either E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio State University or Syracuse in New York.

“Technology and I are not the greatest of friends,” she admitted. “I plan to minor in radio journalism and writing.”

Until she graduates from high school, she will continue to do what she has been doing, playing mother to her siblings since their mother works a lot. Her siblings are 11-year-old Paige, Hannah, 9, Cole, 7, and Zachary, 5.

She has had her writings published in the school newspaper and the Versailles Policy.
