DARKE COUNTY — Here are the scores and stats from the high school girls basketball games from Jan. 26 – 28.

Jan. 27: Ansonia 21 (6-11, 3-6) vs Botkins 45 (8-10, 3-6)

The Lady Tigers have lost six straight games as they lost at home to Botkins. Head coach Connor Custenborder said the team has to get over their mental roadblock if they want to break this streak.

“A lot of us are in our own heads. We just got to be able to move on from it. We’ve told the girls we believe in them fully, we just got to get them to believe in themselves,” Custenborder said. “We’ve shown it, we started the year 4-1.”

The Lady Trojans grabbed an early lead and didn’t look back. The Ansonia defense struggled at first as Botkins got a few open shots and made some threes as they had enough space to shoot them.

In the second quarter, Custenborder took out all five of his starters and sat them for a minute. He said he was frustrated with them at the time and wanted to talk with them.

“We gave up an open three, didn’t matchup out of a timeout. It’s something we’ve been struggling with a lot lately is not knowing who we have,” Custenborder said. “I was frustrated with them, took them out. Then put them back in and they figured it out from there.”

Botkins led 29-10 at halftime and continued to play well in the second half. The Ansonia offense had spurts of good play, but couldn’t string together a run.

Custenborder said turnovers has been an issue lately and it was an issue in this game. The turnovers take away the opportunity for them to press.

He said their press has helped generate offense for them and they just can’t consistently get into the press lately.

Senior Bailey Schmit led the team with six points while sophomore Olivia Creager and junior Gabby Leeper both had four points.

The team has flashed some great play during their losing streak. Custenborder said they have competed with a lot of good teams for a half or for a quarter, they just need to put together a complete game.

After a game against Carlisle, the Lady Tigers will host National Trail on Feb. 1 at 7:15 p.m. and then play at Parkway on Feb. 3 at noon.
