Lathrop puts work on display at hospital

RICHMOND, Ind. — Artist R.L. Lathrop shares his perspective through the artwork he creates by experimenting with a variety of mediums, materials, and textures.

“From My Point of View” is open through the end of October in the MacDowell Gallery, located on the second floor of Reid Health Outpatient Care Center, 1100 Reid Parkway.

Lathrop is a native of Richmond, Ind., where he grew up through middle school before moving to New Madison. He had an early start in drawing and painting in elementary school. Without a high school arts program, Lathrop extended his creativity to painting with oils.

He continued learning by building an extensive art library and from regional artists. He joined the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association and the Preble County Art Association where he was introduced to pastels by Rosie McNees.

As an acrylic abstract artist, Lathrop strives to demonstrate skill and a painterly style. Loose and fun has always been his goal, he said. Typically, Lathrop includes a statement in each work he creates, leading to the exhibition title, “From My Point of View.”

The MacDowell Gallery is named after Barry MacDowell, who served as Reid President and CEO from 1988 to 2008. To visit the exhibit, use the Grand Staircase or the outpatient elevators from the main entrance to the second-floor gallery.
